QR code scanner: read a code from your camera or an image

Point your camera at a code or choose a picture. The result appears as text first.

Use the scanner below to read any QR code. Allow the camera or pick an image file, and the decoded content appears as plain text. Decoding happens inside your browser, so the picture and the result stay on your device. A link is never opened for you: you read it first and can run a link check before you go there.

How to scan a QR code

  1. Choose camera or image

Press Start camera and allow access when your browser asks, or choose a picture that contains a QR code. Photos and screenshots both work.

  2. Read the result

The decoded content appears as plain text together with its type: link, Wi-Fi network, contact card, e-mail, phone number, text message or plain text.

  3. Decide about links

A link is shown but never opened for you. Press Check this link to look it up first, or copy the address and open it yourself once you are happy with it.

Questions and answers

Does the scanner upload my camera feed or my picture?

No. The decoder is a small program that runs in your browser. The camera feed and any image you choose are processed on your device and are not sent to us.

Why does it not open a link by itself?

A QR code can point to a look-alike page, and a printed code can be covered by a sticker with a different one. Showing the address as text lets you read where it goes before you go there.

Which codes can it read?

QR codes, including light-on-dark codes. Other barcodes such as EAN or Code 128 are not read by this tool.

The camera does not start. What should I try?

Check that the page address begins with https, that you allowed camera access for this site in your browser settings, and that no other app is using the camera. You can always choose an image instead.

Can it read a code from a screenshot or a photo of a poster?

Yes. Choose the image file. A sharp, well lit picture with the whole code in view reads best, and a small quiet border around the code helps.
