QR code types
Each type does one job when it is scanned. Pick the job, and the generator on that page is already set up for it.
A QR code can do more than open a website. Depending on its type, a scan can join a Wi-Fi network, save a contact, open a pre-filled e-mail or text message, start a phone call, show a place on the map, add an event to the calendar or fill in a bank transfer. Some types carry their data inside the code and work offline. Others hold a link and need a connection. Pick the type that matches what people should do after scanning; each page below explains it and has the generator ready.
Links and documents
Codes that open something online: a page, a file or an app listing.
-
QR code for a website
Any web address: a shop, a booking page, a form or a landing page. Choose fixed for a link that stays put, editable for a link you may want to swap later.
-
PDF QR code
Upload a menu, brochure or manual and print one code for it. Replace the file later and the printed code opens the new version.
-
App store QR code
Opens your app's install page in the App Store or Google Play, from a poster, a receipt or the packaging of your product.
Contact details
Codes that save you to a phone or start a conversation, on cards, signs and vehicles.
-
QR code business card
A contact code sized for the back of a printed card, so a new contact saves your details in one scan instead of typing them in later.
-
vCard QR code
A contact file inside the code itself. Scanning shows a ready contact with an add button, and it works with no internet connection at all.
-
MeCard QR code
A contact in the short MeCard format, for badges and labels where every square counts.
-
Phone number QR code
Puts your number in the phone's dialler, ready to call. Useful on vans, building signs and posters read from a distance.
-
E-mail QR code
Opens the mail app with recipient, subject and text filled in. Good for orders, sign-ups and feedback that should land in the right inbox.
-
SMS QR code
Opens a text message to your number with the words already typed, which makes keyword opt-ins and quick replies a one-tap job.
Customers and followers
Codes that turn a visit into a review or a follow while the customer is still there.
-
Google review QR code
Opens the review form of your Google Business Profile directly, which removes the searching that makes most customers give up.
-
Instagram QR code
Your handle turned into a profile link that opens Instagram on the phone, so people follow you from a poster, a bag or a shop window.
Data that works offline
Codes that carry everything inside the squares, so they work without a connection.
-
Wi-Fi QR code
Network name, password and security type in one code. Phones offer to join the moment they read it, with no password to spell out.
-
Text QR code
A note, an instruction or a serial number shown on screen, straight from the code. It needs no link, and it works without internet.
-
Google Maps QR code
A pin on the map from exact coordinates, opened in Google Maps, Apple Maps or the phone's own map app, ready for directions.
-
Calendar event QR code
An event entry with title, date, time and place. Phones offer to add it to the calendar, which keeps your date from being forgotten.
-
EPC QR code (Girocode)
A SEPA credit transfer in a code: recipient, IBAN, amount and reference, filled into the payer's banking app for them to confirm.
Social profiles and chats
Codes that open a profile, a channel or a chat, so people follow or message you from print instead of searching for your name.
-
Facebook QR code
Your page, group or event address in a code, so people reach it from a flyer or a counter without searching for your name.
-
TikTok QR code
A profile or video link in a code, so packaging and posters turn into views and follows instead of a search for your handle.
-
YouTube QR code
A video, playlist or channel link in a code, for manuals, classes and posters where a clip explains more than print can.
-
LinkedIn QR code
A profile or company page link in a code, so a conversation at a stand or a talk ends with a connection, not a lost name.
-
WhatsApp QR code
A click-to-chat link in a code, so customers message your business from a door, a bag or a menu without saving your number first.
Menus, offers and link pages
Pages that change often: the menu, this month's offer, or one page with all your links. Editable codes keep the print the same while the page changes.
-
Menu QR code
A code on every table that opens the current menu, so a new dish or a price change never means reprinting.
-
Coupon QR code
A code that opens a discount or voucher page, so flyers and receipts bring people back and you control when the offer ends.
-

How to choose the right type
-
Start from the action
Ask what the person should do right after scanning: read, save, call, join, pay or visit. The type follows from that.
-
Check whether it must work offline
Wi-Fi, contact, text, calendar and payment codes carry their data, so they work in a basement or before a guest is online.
-
Decide fixed or editable
Data inside the code is set once printed. If the destination may change, an editable code holds a short link you can point elsewhere later.
Questions and answers
How many types of QR codes are there?
Technically a QR code just stores text. What phones do with it depends on the format of that text: a web address opens a browser, a WIFI entry joins a network, a vCard creates a contact. The pages above cover the formats phones act on.
Which QR code type is the most common?
The website link, by far. It is also the most flexible, because the page it opens can contain anything. The other types exist to skip a step, like typing a Wi-Fi password.
Can one code do several things?
A fixed code has one type. To offer several actions from one code, link it to a page with several buttons, for example a hosted page on an editable code.
Do all types work with the phone camera?
Current iPhone and Android cameras act on links, Wi-Fi, contacts, e-mail, SMS, phone numbers and calendar events. Payment codes are read inside banking apps rather than the camera.
