Change your packaging link without reprinting
Labels, boxes and inserts last for years. The page behind the code changes whenever you need it to.
To change your packaging link without reprinting, print an editable QR code. It holds a short link you control, so when the product page moves or a new recipe page launches, you change the destination in the app and every printed label follows on the next scan. Make the code here and send the vector file to your printer.
The box stays, the page moves on
A code on the label opens this season's recipe page today and next season's tomorrow.
How to put a changeable link on packaging
Choose the first destination
A product page, care instructions, a recipe or a refill shop. Pick a page you are sure exists on launch day.
Make an editable code
Create the code and give it a clear name, such as the product and pack size, so you can find it again in a year.
Use your own domain
A code on a subdomain like go.yourbrand.com stays under your control. Starter, passes and the trial include one custom domain.
Send a vector file to the printer
SVG, PDF or EPS keep the code sharp on labels and curved packs. Ask for a proof and scan it before the full run.
Worked example: a tea brand with three blends
- One code per blend
- Each blend's box carries its own code, pointing to the brewing guide for that tea on the brand's subdomain.
- Six months later
- The website moves to a new shop system and every product address changes. The brand updates three destinations in the app, and the boxes in shops and cupboards keep working.
- In the holiday season
- For a few weeks the codes point to a gift page, then back to the brewing guides. Not one label was reprinted.
Fixed or editable on packaging?
-
Fixed QR code (static)
A fixed code holds the address itself. It is free and fine when the address will never change, such as your home page. If the page behind it moves, every printed pack points to a dead link.
-
Editable QR code (dynamic) Our pick for this job
Editable is the safer choice for anything printed in volume: change the destination at any time and see scans per product. From $9 a month with 50 editable codes after the 14-day trial. It stops forwarding if you stop paying, with warnings first, and Keep-alive keeps up to 15 codes redirecting for $3 a month.
Print tips for labels and boxes
Mind the curve
On bottles and tins, keep the code small enough to sit on a part of the curve that looks flat to the camera, or turn it so its columns run along the curve.
Leave a quiet zone
Keep a margin of plain background around the code. Designs that crowd it with text or pattern fail on cheaper phones.
Proof on the real material
Kraft board, foil and textured labels change contrast. Scan the printer's proof on the actual stock before you approve the run.
Questions and answers
Before you print
- Is it free?
- Fixed codes are free: make as many as you like, download a PNG with no sign-up, and get every other format and print files with a free account. Editable codes come with a plan, a pass, Keep-alive or the 14-day trial.
- Can I change the link after printing?
- Yes, with an editable code. It holds a short link you control, so you can point the printed code somewhere new any time, and the next scan opens the new page. A fixed code keeps the link it was made with.
- Can I use my own domain?
- Yes. A custom domain is included on passes, from Starter, and during the trial. Starter covers one subdomain, for example go.yourbrand.com, and apex domains start on Pro.
- What happens if I stop paying?
- Editable codes work to the end of your paid period, and after a failed payment every code keeps working for 14 days. Turn codes back on within 12 months. Fixed codes keep working as long as their links do.
What happens if my plan ends while packs are still in shops?
Editable codes stop forwarding when a plan or pass ends, after a 14-day grace period if a payment fails. You can reactivate within 12 months, and Keep-alive keeps up to 15 codes redirecting for $3 a month.
Can I move the codes to another provider later?
If the codes run on your own domain, yes. Export the codes and their destinations, with ready-made redirect rules for common servers, point the domain at the new setup, and the printed packs keep working.
Is one code per product enough?
Usually, yes. One code per product or pack size lets each point to its own page and shows which products people scan most. A code per print batch only helps if you track batches.
How small can a code on a label be?
It depends on the print method and the material. An editable code holds a short link, which keeps the pattern coarse and lets it print smaller. The print check under the preview gives the smallest width your exact code prints well at.
Do I need a new code for a new product?
Give each new product its own code. Codes for discontinued products can point to their successor, so old packs in cupboards still lead somewhere useful.
Print once, keep the link current
Make an editable code, check it in the print preview and send a vector file to your packaging printer.
