Every design is checked before you download it, and the result shows next to the preview:
- Scan test passed · Prints well from a given width: print it at that width or larger.
- Scans, but check this: it works, but one thing is close to the limit, for example the contrast.
- This code may not scan: fix the design with Change the design, or choose Download anyway if you know why.
Rules the check applies
- Size for the distance: as a rule of thumb, a code should be about a tenth of the scan distance wide, and wider when it holds more content. In the design studio, set Where it will be printed or Scan distance (cm) and read Printed width.
- Smallest dot: each square of the code should be at least 0.4 mm when printed.
- Quiet zone: leave a margin of at least four squares around the code. Do not place text or images there.
- Contrast: dark code on a light background. The check fails below a contrast ratio of 3 and advises 4.5 or more.
Before a large print run
Print one copy at the real size and scan it with two different phones, in the light where it will hang. You can also use the QR code scanner on a photo of the proof.
Every download of an editable code is listed on the editor's Print record tab with its format and print check result.
