How to make a Wi-Fi QR code
Guests point their camera, tap join and they are online, with nobody spelling out the password.
To make a Wi-Fi QR code, enter the network name exactly as it appears, the password and the security type, usually WPA. The code holds those details itself, so phones join the network straight after the scan. It is free, works offline and keeps working until you change the password.
Online in one tap
The phone reads the network and password from the code and offers to join. Nothing to type, nothing to spell.
Find the smallest size that scans
Make it in four steps
Copy the network name
Match capitals and spaces exactly; Harbour Guests and harbour guests are different networks.
Add the password
Type it once here instead of a hundred times at the counter.
Pick the security type
WPA covers most routers. Choose None only for open networks.
Print and place it
Put it on a table card, by the door or on the room key holder, at eye level.
Little touches guests notice
A clear caption
Scan to join Wi-Fi under the code tells people what happens before they lift the phone.
A guest network
Share a separate guest network so the password on the table never opens your own devices.
One code per network
Different floors or rooms with their own networks each get a code with their own name.
Wi-Fi code specs
- Size
- 3 to 4 cm on a table card read from 30 cm.
- Content
- Network name, password and security type, held in the code itself.
Questions and answers
Before you print
- Is it free?
- Fixed codes are free: make as many as you like, download a PNG with no sign-up, and get every other format and print files with a free account. Editable codes come with a plan, a pass, Keep-alive or the 14-day trial.
- Can I change the link after printing?
- Yes, with an editable code. It holds a short link you control, so you can point the printed code somewhere new any time, and the next scan opens the new page. A fixed code keeps the link it was made with.
- Can I use my own domain?
- Yes. A custom domain is included on passes, from Starter, and during the trial. Starter covers one subdomain, for example go.yourbrand.com, and apex domains start on Pro.
- What happens if I stop paying?
- Editable codes work to the end of your paid period, and after a failed payment every code keeps working for 14 days. Turn codes back on within 12 months. Fixed codes keep working as long as their links do.
Does a Wi-Fi QR code work on iPhone and Android?
Yes. The camera app on current iPhones and Android phones reads Wi-Fi codes and offers to join the network.
Do I need an editable code for Wi-Fi?
No. A fixed code holds the network details directly and needs no internet to work. When you change the password, print a fresh code.
Is my password visible in the code?
It is stored in the pattern, so anyone who scans it can join. Use a guest network for codes you put on display.
What if the network name has special characters?
Type it exactly as the router shows it. The generator escapes characters such as semicolons so phones read the name correctly.
Why does the scan show the network but fail to join?
Usually a typo in the password or the wrong security type. Check both against the router label and make the code again.
Can I add a logo to a Wi-Fi code?
Yes. Logos, colours and frames work on Wi-Fi codes too, free.
Share your Wi-Fi in one scan
Fill in the network above, add a frame that says Scan to join and print it for your tables.
