QR code A/B testing from one printed code
Print one code, send scans to two pages in turn, and keep the page that wins.
An A/B test QR code splits the scans of one printed code between two or more pages by weight, for example 50% each. Every scan is recorded with the page it opened, so after a few hundred scans you see which headline or offer people act on.
Two pages, one flyer
The same flyer sends one scan to page A and the next to page B, and the app counts both.
Templates for this code
-
Offer flyer
Pine green with Scan for the offer, for the flyer you test.
-
Clean test
Plain black squares, so the design never skews the result.
-
Shop window test
A boxed code for shop windows and counters.
How to run an A/B test with a QR code
Make two pages
Two versions of the same page with one difference, such as the headline or the price.
Set the weights
In the app, list both links and give each a share, for example 50 and 50.
Print one code
Every flyer carries the same code, so print costs stay the same.
Read the result
Compare scans per page with the sign-ups or sales each page brings, then send every scan to the winner.
Fixed or editable for a split test?
-
Fixed QR code (static)
A fixed code opens one page for good, so it cannot split. Use it once the test has a winner and the page will not change.
-
Editable QR code (dynamic)
The split sits on the short link of an editable code: change weights mid-campaign and see scans per page. Try it 14 days free, then plans from $9 a month.
What people test with one code
Offers
10% off against a free gift on the same flyer.
Landing pages
A short page against a long one.
Sign-up forms
Two fields against five.
Menus
Photo menu against text menu for average order size.
Print tips for test codes
One design for all
Print the same code and caption on every piece, so only the page differs.
Enough scans
Plan for at least a few hundred scans before you call a winner.
Size
Keep it at least 2 cm wide on flyers and 4 cm on posters.
How the split works
- Weights
- Each link gets a share; the shares add up to 100.
- Counting
- Each scan is recorded with the page it opened.
- Repeat visitors
- A phone that scans again on the same day sees the same page.
Questions and answers
Before you print
- Is it free?
- Fixed codes are free: make as many as you like, download a PNG with no sign-up, and get every other format and print files with a free account. Editable codes come with a plan, a pass, Keep-alive or the 14-day trial.
- Can I change the link after printing?
- Yes, with an editable code. It holds a short link you control, so you can point the printed code somewhere new any time, and the next scan opens the new page. A fixed code keeps the link it was made with.
- Can I use my own domain?
- Yes. A custom domain is included on passes, from Starter, and during the trial. Starter covers one subdomain, for example go.yourbrand.com, and apex domains start on Pro.
- What happens if I stop paying?
- Editable codes work to the end of your paid period, and after a failed payment every code keeps working for 14 days. Turn codes back on within 12 months. Fixed codes keep working as long as their links do.
What is an A/B test QR code?
One printed code whose short link sends scans to two or more pages by weight, so you can compare how each page performs.
How many scans do I need?
A few hundred per page gives a fair first read. Small differences need more.
Can I test more than two pages?
Yes. Add up to the number of links your plan allows and give each a weight.
Can I stop the test and keep one page?
Yes. Set the winner to 100 and every printed code opens it from the next scan on.
Will a person see both versions?
Not on the same day: a phone that scans twice that day opens the same page both times.
Is a split test free?
The split needs an editable code. A single fixed code to one page is free in SVG, PNG, JPG, WebP, PDF and EPS.
Let the scans decide
