Smart redirect QR code by device, country and time
One printed code that opens the right page for each phone, place and hour.
A smart redirect QR code sends each scan where it fits: the App Store on an iPhone, Google Play on Android, a French page in France, the lunch menu at noon. You print one code and set the rules in the app, with a fallback link for every scan no rule matches.
Same poster, the right page
Two people scan the same poster. The iPhone opens the App Store and the Android phone opens Google Play.
Templates for this code
-
Route card
Navy with Scan to start for posters that serve every phone.
-
Night shift
Dark dots on cream for signs whose link changes after hours.
-
Country box
A boxed code for travel posters read in many countries.
How to set up a smart redirect
Pick the fallback
The page every scan opens when no rule applies, usually your home page.
Add the rules
In the app, add a rule per device, country, language or time window, each with its own link.
Test on two phones
Scan with an iPhone and an Android phone and check each lands where you set it.
Change rules any time
Edit a rule and the printed code follows on the next scan.
Fixed or editable for smart redirects?
-
Fixed QR code (static)
A fixed code stores one address, so it always opens the same page. It works as the fallback only.
-
Editable QR code (dynamic)
Rules live on the short link of an editable code, so they can change after printing and each rule shows its own scan count. Try it 14 days free, then plans from $9 a month.
Where one code serves many audiences
Apps on two stores
One poster code that opens the right store for each phone.
Travel and tourism
Visitors land on the page in their own language.
Restaurants
Breakfast, lunch and dinner menus by the hour.
Events
Before the day, the ticket page; on the day, the schedule.
Print tips for smart redirect codes
Keep the caption general
Scan to start fits every rule, while Download on iPhone would mislead Android users.
Size
Short links keep the code simple, so 2 cm works on cards and 4 cm on posters.
Test before the print run
Check each rule on a real phone before you send the file to the printer.
What a rule can check
- Device
- iPhone, iPad, Android or desktop.
- Place and language
- The country of the scan and the phone's language setting.
- Time
- Days of the week and hours, in the time zone you pick.
Questions and answers
Before you print
- Is it free?
- Fixed codes are free: make as many as you like, download a PNG with no sign-up, and get every other format and print files with a free account. Editable codes come with a plan, a pass, Keep-alive or the 14-day trial.
- Can I change the link after printing?
- Yes, with an editable code. It holds a short link you control, so you can point the printed code somewhere new any time, and the next scan opens the new page. A fixed code keeps the link it was made with.
- Can I use my own domain?
- Yes. A custom domain is included on passes, from Starter, and during the trial. Starter covers one subdomain, for example go.yourbrand.com, and apex domains start on Pro.
- What happens if I stop paying?
- Editable codes work to the end of your paid period, and after a failed payment every code keeps working for 14 days. Turn codes back on within 12 months. Fixed codes keep working as long as their links do.
What is a smart redirect QR code?
It is an editable code whose short link checks each scan against your rules and opens the matching page, with a fallback for everything else.
Can one QR code open the App Store and Google Play?
Yes. Add a device rule: iPhone and iPad scans go to the App Store, Android scans go to Google Play, and the rest open your website.
How does it know the country?
From the network address of the scan, looked up when the scan happens.
Can rules depend on the time of day?
Yes. Set days and hours in your time zone, for example the lunch menu from 11:00 to 15:00.
What happens when no rule matches?
The scan opens the fallback link, so every scan lands somewhere useful.
Do I need an editable code?
Yes. The rules sit on the short link, which only editable codes have. The generator above makes the fallback as a free fixed code.
One code for every phone
Make the fallback link above, then add rules in the app with a free trial.
