EPC QR code generator (Girocode)
Enter recipient, IBAN, amount and reference. The payer's banking app fills in the SEPA transfer, ready to confirm.
An EPC QR code, called Girocode in Germany and Austria, holds a SEPA credit transfer as defined by the European Payments Council: recipient, IBAN, amount in euros and reference. A banking app scans it, fills in the transfer and the payer confirms. Enter the details below and print the code on invoices, donation flyers or membership letters.
The transfer fills itself in
Print the code on the invoice. The payer scans it in their banking app, checks the amount and confirms.
Templates for this code
-
Invoice corner
Plain square code for the corner of an invoice, as banking apps expect.
-
Donation box
A banner caption for donation boxes and charity flyers.
-
Club fees
A boxed code in navy for membership letters and club notices.
How to create an EPC QR code
Enter the recipient and IBAN
Use the account holder name as the bank knows it and the full IBAN. The generator checks the IBAN checksum and tells you if a digit is wrong.
Add BIC, amount and reference
BIC is optional for transfers within the EEA. Leave the amount empty for donations so the payer can choose. The reference helps you match the payment.
Scan it with your banking app
Open your own banking app's photo transfer or QR option and scan the preview. Stop before confirming, and check every field.
Download for print or PDF invoices
SVG or PDF for printed invoices and letters, PNG for invoices generated by your accounting tool.
Payment codes have to be fixed
-
Fixed QR code (static)
We recommend fixed. Banking apps read the transfer data straight from the code. A fixed EPC code is free, works offline and shows the payer exactly what will be paid.
-
Editable QR code (dynamic)
Banking apps take the transfer from the squares themselves, so a short link stays a link to them. For a changing amount, make a new fixed code per invoice, or leave the amount empty and let the payer fill it in.
Where an EPC code saves typing
Invoices
Clients pay without copying a 22-character IBAN, and your reference arrives exactly as written, which makes matching payments easier.
Club fees and memberships
Membership letters with the yearly fee and member number in the reference.
Donations
Flyers and posters for collections, with the amount left open for the donor.
Rent and shared costs
A code on the noticeboard or in the group chat for a fixed monthly payment.
Print specs for EPC codes
At least 2 cm on invoices
The standard asks for medium error correction, which we set for you. On an A4 invoice, place the code at 2 to 3 cm near the payment details.
Label it
Write "Pay with your banking app" or "Girocode" next to the code, so payers recognise what it is.
Keep it plain
Black on white with square dots is what banking apps read best. Skip logos and decoration on payment codes.
What goes into the code
- Required
- Recipient name (up to 70 characters) and IBAN.
- Optional
- BIC, amount in euros, and a payment reference or message of up to 140 characters.
- Standard
- The EPC quick response code for SEPA credit transfers, version 002, with error correction level M.
Questions and answers
Before you print
- Is it free?
- Fixed codes are free: make as many as you like, download a PNG with no sign-up, and get every other format and print files with a free account. Editable codes come with a plan, a pass, Keep-alive or the 14-day trial.
- Can I change the link after printing?
- Yes, with an editable code. It holds a short link you control, so you can point the printed code somewhere new any time, and the next scan opens the new page. A fixed code keeps the link it was made with.
- Can I use my own domain?
- Yes. A custom domain is included on passes, from Starter, and during the trial. Starter covers one subdomain, for example go.yourbrand.com, and apex domains start on Pro.
- What happens if I stop paying?
- Editable codes work to the end of your paid period, and after a failed payment every code keeps working for 14 days. Turn codes back on within 12 months. Fixed codes keep working as long as their links do.
What is the difference between an EPC QR code and a Girocode?
None in practice. EPC QR code is the name of the European Payments Council standard; Girocode is the name used in Germany and Austria for the same code.
Which banking apps can read EPC codes?
Many banking apps in the euro area, especially in Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Belgium and Finland, offer a photo or QR transfer that reads EPC codes. Support varies by bank, so print the IBAN in text as well.
Is it safe to share my IBAN in a QR code?
The code holds the same details you print on an invoice anyway. The payer still has to confirm the transfer in their banking app, so nothing is paid without their approval.
Does oqrely handle the payment?
No. The code only fills in the transfer form in the payer's own banking app. The money goes directly from their bank to yours.
Can I use EPC codes outside the euro?
No. The standard covers SEPA credit transfers in euros only. Amounts in other currencies are not supported.
