A plant label QR code with care advice
The stake is too small for care advice. One scan shows light, water, feeding and hardiness for that exact variety.
A plant label QR code opens the care guide for that variety: light, watering, feeding, hardiness and when to repot. Write one short page per variety, paste each link above or make the whole range at once in the bulk tool, and print the code on the stake or hanging tag in waterproof material.
Yellow leaves, one scan
A customer scans the stake still in the pot and finds why the leaves turn yellow and how often to water.
How to label a plant range with care codes
One page per variety
Light, water, feeding, hardiness and size at maturity, with one photo of the plant grown on. Keep it to one phone screen of reading.
Make the codes in bulk
List variety names and page links in a sheet and upload it to the bulk tool. Every variety gets its own code and file name.
Print on outdoor stock
Polypropylene or synthetic tag stock survives watering and sun. Paper labels go soft in a week on a wet bench.
Keep the pages current
New advice or a better photo? Update the page or point the editable code at it, and every stake in the shop and in gardens shows it.
Worked example: a garden centre with 300 varieties
- The labels
- Stake labels of 2.5 × 12 cm carry the variety name, the price and a 1.8 cm code above the soil line, where it stays clean.
- The care page
- "Bright, indirect light. Water when the top 3 cm are dry. Feed monthly from April to September. Not frost hardy." Plus a photo at three years.
- At home
- Customers keep the stake in the pot and scan it months later when leaves yellow, and the page answers before they phone the shop.
Fixed or editable for plant labels?
-
Fixed QR code (static)
A fixed code holds the link to the care page on your own site. It is free and right when page addresses never change.
-
Editable QR code (dynamic) Our pick for this job
Editable codes let you move care pages to a new site or shop system without reprinting stakes that are already in customers' gardens, and they show which varieties people look up most. From $9 a month after the 14-day trial.
Label specs that last outdoors
Size by label
Stakes and hanging tags take a code of 1.5 to 2 cm. Bench signs read from a step away need 4 cm or more.
Ink that stays black
Thermal transfer ribbon with resin ink resists water and fading better than desktop inkjet. Test a label after a week on the outdoor bench.
Hardiness in plain words
Give the coldest temperature the plant survives next to the rating you use, such as RHS H4 or USDA zone 7, because most buyers know neither scale.
Questions and answers
Before you print
- Is it free?
- Fixed codes are free: make as many as you like, download a PNG with no sign-up, and get every other format and print files with a free account. Editable codes come with a plan, a pass, Keep-alive or the 14-day trial.
- Can I change the link after printing?
- Yes, with an editable code. It holds a short link you control, so you can point the printed code somewhere new any time, and the next scan opens the new page. A fixed code keeps the link it was made with.
- Can I use my own domain?
- Yes. A custom domain is included on passes, from Starter, and during the trial. Starter covers one subdomain, for example go.yourbrand.com, and apex domains start on Pro.
- What happens if I stop paying?
- Editable codes work to the end of your paid period, and after a failed payment every code keeps working for 14 days. Turn codes back on within 12 months. Fixed codes keep working as long as their links do.
What should a plant label code link to?
A short care page for that exact variety, not your homepage. Light, water, feeding and hardiness are what people look for when they scan.
How big should the code be on a plant stake?
1.5 to 2 cm wide on a stake or hanging tag. Put it above the soil line, so watering and compost do not cover it.
Will the code survive watering and sun?
On synthetic tag stock with resin ink, yes, for a season or more. Paper and desktop inkjet labels smudge on a wet bench.
Can I make codes for hundreds of varieties at once?
Yes. Upload a sheet with one row per variety to the bulk tool and download every code, named by variety, ready for your label software.
Can one care page cover several varieties?
It can for close relatives with the same needs, such as colour forms of one plant. Give them a shared page and keep the variety name on the stake.
Can I see which plants people look up?
With editable codes, the scan counts per variety show which plants send customers to their care page, a useful hint for staff training and stock.
