How to plan a sign with a QR code

Measure the scanning distance
Stand where people will stand. The code needs about one tenth of that distance in width, more for a dense code.

Choose editable for listings
A property sign moves from one listing to the next. An editable code lets the same rider point at the new property.

Mind the angle and the light
Windows reflect and riders sit low. Test the first print from the real spot at the time of day people pass.

Use outdoor-grade vinyl or laminate so rain and sun do not fade the code.
Sign print specs

- 24 by 6 inches, read from a few steps away. Give the code at least 14 cm for a short link read from 1 m.
- Poster
- A4 for windows and notice boards. Read from 2 m, a short-link code needs about 28 cm, so posters suit closer spots.
- Material
- Matte vinyl for outdoors; avoid reflective or metallic finishes behind the code.

Before you print
- Is it free?
- Fixed codes are free: make as many as you like, download a PNG with no sign-up, and get every other format and print files with a free account. Editable codes come with a plan, a pass, Keep-alive or the 14-day trial.
- Can I change the link after printing?
- Yes, with an editable code. It holds a short link you control, so you can point the printed code somewhere new any time, and the next scan opens the new page. A fixed code keeps the link it was made with.
- Can I use my own domain?
- Yes. A custom domain is included on passes, from Starter, and during the trial. Starter covers one subdomain, for example go.yourbrand.com, and apex domains start on Pro.
- What happens if I stop paying?
- Editable codes work to the end of your paid period, and after a failed payment every code keeps working for 14 days. Turn codes back on within 12 months. Fixed codes keep working as long as their links do.
How big should a QR code be on a sign?
About a tenth of the scanning distance for a short link, plus the white margin: around 14 cm at 1 m and 42 cm at 3 m. The size calculator gives the exact width.
Can I reuse a sign rider for the next listing?
Yes, with an editable code. Change the destination in the app and the same printed rider opens the new listing on the next scan.
Do posters in shop windows scan through glass?
Usually, if the glass is clean and the poster is pressed flat against it. Reflections are the main problem, so test at the times people walk past.
Which colours work outdoors?
Dark codes on a light background. The high-contrast colour set holds up best in direct sun and at dusk.
What should the line on the sign say?
What people get: Scan for photos and price, Scan to book a viewing. Keep it to a few words that read from the pavement.
